THE CONVERSATION
Paul M Smith Photography
Response
My first attempt to this response was to practise the photoshop technique of layer masks on photos given to me.
In my second attempt I went out and took some photos and edited them.
Exhibition visit- Deutsche Börse prize at the Photographer's Gallery
I went to the Photographer's Gallery to see the Deutsche Börse Photography Foundation Prize 2018 exhibition where a photographer called Batia Suter had an installation presenting her large unframed photographic prints. The artists places objects in new and varying contexts and compositions, breaking conventions of subject choices and visual editing.
Secret Locations
In this task I was asked to go out in my local area and take photos of secret or neglected landscapes.

Three Strands
First Strand : Secrets within a community
In this strand, I wanted to look at the secrets within my own community. I wanted to capture in photographs the unique and hidden corners of my community and the secrets within the walls that you'd only know from living there.
Second Strand : Conventions of Beauty
In this strand I wanted to explore hidden identities that people use in everyday life. For example I decided to photograph girls wearing makeup and taking it off to capture the way people present themselves to the world and how this is influenced by our own identities.I chose to take simple portraits of the subjects so that focus remained on the makeup and subtle differences in the subject's face and expression. I was happy with the outcome of the photos as the colour came out bright and simplicity of the white background emphasised and complemented the features of the subjects. Too improve the photo I would get more models to take more photos of a more diverse group. I would also capture the process in motion by creating a gif or a video. I would develop this strand by looking at people in their work environment and home environment and the difference of how people choose to portray themselves in the outside world and how this reflects on their identities and lifestyles.
Third strand : Breaking Conventions of portraits
In this strand i decided too look at the idea of secret identity and about how the physical representation of someone is not the full representation of who they are but yet a mask to the representation. I wanted to achieve in capturing peoples physical representation with a glass of shard to act as a layer to mask there physical identity. I will develop this by digitally adding a layer to the portraits i will take. I set up the studio with no additional lighting and a tripod. I then had a pier hold up the shard of glass according to how i wanted e.g. angles of how it was held.
WWW: I am happy with the outcome of my photos because i captured the photos as i planned.
EBI: You took a wider range of photos. Also taking pictures with the shard of glass at different lengths from the camera.

First Development of Breaking Conventions of Portraits : Layering portraits
In this development I decided to look at the portrait and add the original coding of the portrait as a layer onto the portrait. I wanted to achieve in partially hiding the facial features of my model so that it would change a viewers opinion his identity. This is links to secrets and codes due to the fact that codes (facial features) are taken away and secrets are held as thoughts.
Firstly i used text edit to get the original coding of the photo and added i the portrait as another layer. I then erased the coding in the background of the photo and then i edited the coding on his face according to the shadows.
WWW : I was happy with the outcome of these photos because the use of coding was an effective way of covering the features of the model without completely hiding them.
EBI : To improve I would use bigger coding over the images so it's visually clearer and easy to identify.

Second Development : Multiple Subjects
In this development i decided to combine to two previous ideas so that I could achieve in having multiple representations of my first development. This is linked to
